Women of minorities: Anikó Orsós, the roma who never gave up

The social inclusion of roma people remains one of the most complex challenges in Europe. The ACADE-ME project was created to address this issue, placing education, awareness, and positive role models at the forefront of the fight against anti-Roma discrimination, prejudice, and barriers to empowerment. Through success stories, ACADE-ME demonstrates that change is possible.

In this context, we want to share the story of Anikó Orsós, a testimony collected by FUEN as part of the “Women of Minorities” project, which aims to strengthen the representation and rights of women in minority communities across Europe. Anikó is also an active member of AMRITA, an organization advocating for the rights of Roma communities and a partner of the ACADE-ME project.

“It wasn’t easy. You always need connections and someone who believes in you. The truth is that if you are born roma, you have to prove your worth over and over again—whether at university or in the workplace.”

These words reflect the determination of Anikó Orsós, who grew up in a roma settlement in Hungary in extreme poverty alongside seven siblings. At a very young age, she became a mother of two, facing what seemed to be insurmountable obstacles. But she never gave up.

She went back to school, completed her studies, and earned a university degree. Today, she is the Women’s Rights Officer at the European Roma Rights Center in Budapest. As a leading advocate for roma women, she works to raise awareness of the discrimination they face in Hungary and across Europe.

In the video produced by FUEN, Anikó shares her journey—speaking about prejudice, struggles, and her unwavering commitment to building a better future. She also highlights the many layers of discrimination that minorities continue to endure.

Yet, despite everything, she remains optimistic: “I am happy to see more and more strong Roma women reaching positions of influence.” Her message to young Roma women and anyone facing similar challenges is clear:

“Never give up. Fight for your goals and seek out people willing to help you. Because, no matter how harsh society may be, there will always be someone ready to lend a hand.”
