ACADE-ME: Eeducation and empowerment to inspire romani women to generate positive change

Romani women face complex challenges, including gender stereotypes, social exclusion, and barriers to education. But what happens when they choose to take a different path? The ACADE-ME project is committed to telling the stories of those who have broken the mold, offering role models and empowerment opportunities for young Romani women. Discover how education can become the key to real and lasting change.

Since gender inequalities persist, the gender gap is evident in almost all socioeconomic sectors. It is clear that many women tend to make life choices—including those related to education and employment—by conforming to traditional gender roles and the stereotypes that shape their preferences.

In broader society, the role of women is linked to specific expectations and social responsibilities, such as caring for the family and embodying altruism and self-sacrifice within a hierarchical structure defined by traditional gender norms. For Romani women, these expectations are a reality that makes their situation not significantly different from that of women in other social groups. However, for Romani women, these gender norms and expectations are compounded by extreme poverty and exclusion, placing an additional burden on them.

Focusing on Romani communities, particularly the most marginalized and insular ones, the role of women retains archaic characteristics. This phenomenon is associated with early marriages and leads to multiple forms of discrimination and exclusion against Romani women and girls, the vast majority of whom end up following a predetermined life path. Consequently, common social standards keep these women away from education, professional retraining, and economic independence—in other words, from social integration.

But what happens when a Romani woman decides to follow a different path?

It appears that girls and women who make choices that deviate from conventional norms and prioritize education—”like the gadje”—are more likely to face criticism and negative attitudes within their community. As a result, Romani women who are seen by broader society as role models are not always recognized as such within their own community, because they have lost the dominant characteristics by not conforming to traditional gender norms.

This is one of the main obstacles that prevent women from building a better future and realizing their dreams. Considering the challenges they face in defying social and gender norms, it becomes clear that Romani girls and women need role models who inspire and motivate them.

In other words, it is essential for young Romani women to find inspiration in female figures from their community who, through education, have overcome multiple obstacles and contributed to redefining the identity of the contemporary Romani woman. At the same time, it is crucial to support those who have pursued an academic path so they can become agents of change and ambassadors in the fight against discrimination within their communities.

Examples of Romani women from the past and present who have forged a new path for themselves and for new generations are now seen as positive role models, as they inspire and signal social change, emphasizing that Romani identity is not an obstacle to achieving one’s dreams.

Join the ACADE-ME project—Accelerating Capabilities against Anti-gypsyism and Discriminations in Education—and help raise awareness both within and outside Romani communities about the importance of education and female empowerment. By supporting educational paths and promoting positive role models, we can break down stereotypes and create new opportunities for young Romani women, enabling them to build a more inclusive, independent, and opportunity-rich future.
